also... I had my draft last night, and despite all my arguments about him, I picked gagner with my 19th pick. I then dropped him to pick up Schultz, then when Kopitar is on IR I'm going to pick him back up. BOOM

I'm not coo confident since we'll only have one scoring line with Kesler out and Booth banged up too.

Schultz went undrafted? I have a draft on Thurs with the HB guys and one with buddies on Fri, I'm curious to see how high he goes.

I took Schultz with my last pick in an auction draft with 12 people. Nobody touched him.

Did you watch the Oilers play last year? He was all around the oilers best defenceman and improving still as the year went on..

I was interested in dealing for Luongo during the summer but as time goes on I sour more and more to the idea.

I love Luongo and think he gets way too much hate from nuckleheads, but his contract is way too huge an albatross. The only way I'd do it is if the Oilers can get Mr.Burns/Katz to sign on to an amnesty buyout if he doesn't work out (and make it work with the new CBA, which I'm pretty sure it wouldn't).

At this point, I'd hold off on a goalie acquisition and just push hard to make the playoffs. I may sound like a homer here, but the stars seem to be aligned for a playoff push for the Oil, and while I know there are a lot of "if's" that need to happen for the Oilers to make such a huge jump in the standings, Fistric fits nicely into the equation and makes me that much more hopeful.

If the Oilers could pull off a playoff appearance, they could look at UFA's in the offseason to make the necessary steps to contend next year.

One quick thing before getting into my actual reply.

I love ur blogs Richard, but you contradicted yourself in this one.

You started it by saying signs everywhere that Oilers will make a move before the season starts and then went into what you thought it might be. Then you ended it by saying you'd be "totally surprised" if they made another move before the first puck drops. Which is it? Haha.

Anyways, my main point in replying was that Vancouver has an abundance of d men this year with the Barker/Vandemeer signings. Edmonton could still use a serviceable body who is still young and could come up with the kids.

What would you have to say about a Luongo/Tanev or Connaughton combo coming to the Oil and what would you send back. IMO Dubnyk would have to come back so Schneider has a legit backup at the least.

I'm saying Luongo/Connaughton for Hemsky/Dubnyk and a 3rd

Doesn't get it done imo. No risk for the Canucks, really. You get a good backup in Dubnyk, a guy who can stick handle in a phone booth in Hemsky (who is reportedly healthier than he's been in years), and a draft pick for a nobody and an aging allstar goalie with a dreadfully long contract.

Can't speak for clouts but I agree with him in the sense that there would have to be a bad contract going back for the Oil to deal for luongo (be it horcoff or khabbi).

ETA:

Mind you I'd do the deal sans bad contract the other way if it could be done for peanuts.

And before anyone says Edmonton giving up too much, tell me how dominant and injury free Hemsky has been in the past.

Luongo is an Allstar calibre goalie with a less than desirable contract. Connaughton has huge potential, and in a few years him and Schultz could be a top pairing in the league IMO.

Hemsky needs to prove he can stay healthy for a full season and still be top 6. Hemsky at 5 million per almost counts as a bad contract IMO till he proves otherwise.

Gillis, to the best of my knowledge, has indicated he has no intentions of dealing him within his own division...non starter. Won't happen!

If this team is committed to the future and winning, one of the kids needs to be captain. Look at the past few cup winning teams. Crosby, toews and brown. Basically entrusting the team with the kids an letting the older players play there role. It doesn't mean horcoff cant be a voice in the locker room, just moving on to a new better chapter with the oilers. I wish benn was signed so we can make him captain
Im really looking forward to a stars oilers playoff series, those were some of the best.

Which is why the deal wouldn't get done. The Oilers (and a lot of their fans) still have some faith in Hemsky and his abilities despite his injury history. The guy has sick hands. I just don't see the deal you suggested being anywhere close to what it would take for the Oilers to take Luongo off the Canucks hands.

I've often said that Eberle should be the next captain of the Oilers. He reminds me of Doug Weight in a sense.
